Salzwasser (German for ‘salt water’) is a start-up and label from Hamburg, Germany that offers sustainable high-quality cotton and wool pieces.
To pursue its goals and actively shape change in the clothing industry, it works with regional and European production facilities and mainly uses natural organic materials for the production of its durable fashion such as GOTS certified biological cotton and Merino wool from Australia and New Zealand.
A portion of the proceeds from its sales is donated to projects supporting the protection of the world’s oceans through the non-profit association Salzwasser e.V..
The brand wants to expand its environmental commitment. It has planned several new projects for s/s 2021 meant to support environmental protection such as the launch of its first recyclable product, expanding its existing assortment and organizing educational events.
This newborn German sustainable label is currently developing a recyclable product. The idea is to create a T-shirt from an old and already worn one to be branded and resold. To achieve this, it is introducing a “reverse” logistics as customers can send their favorite worn piece to Salzwasser instead of disposing of it.
“With Salzwasser we pursue a social business model. We want to sell fashion that brings joy and at the same time does good for our environment and fellow human beings. To get one step closer to this goal, we want to distribute circular fashion. To achieve this, we want to introduce the first reverse logistics for one of our products, preferably within this year,” said Jan Majora, co-founder of the brand.

Another strategy of the label already focuses on climate-positive shipping as it alredy ships according to the climate neutral DHL GoGreen program.
For 2021, the fashion start-up wants to go further by preserving and reforesting forest areas in cooperation with Generation Forest: for every package shipped, Salzwasser aims to plant a Salzwasser forest in Panama in collaboration with local partners to protect and preserve that area in the long term. This way, the label aims to achieve a positive climate balance.

Last year, the company donated €10,000 to environmental and nature conservation projects. In 2021, Salzwasser will continue to focus on its environmental commitment. “We don’t want to be part of the problem, but part of the solution. For this purpose, we have founded the nonprofit association Salzwasser e.V., with which we currently support the protection and restoration of mangrove forests. To bring even more attention to our projects, we are planning educational events for summer 2021–hopefully in person again,” says co-founder, Lennart Henze.

The fashion startup’s store in Hamburg, at Kampstrasse 12, is set to become a meeting place. For Summer 2021 it plans to be the site of film screenings, lectures, panel discussions and photo exhibitions on topics such as sea and marine conservation, fashion and sustainability.

The Salzwasser collection is also evolving for s/s 2021. It is adding overshirts to shirts, sweaters, hoodies, dresses and accessories. It will also enlarge its selection of hues.
The brand’s prices range from €40 for a 100% biological cotton T-shirt and €50 for a GOTS-certified Merino hat to €100 for a hooded sweatshirt made with 100% bio-cotton or €80 for an 85% biological cotton and 15% recycled polyester hoodie.
